How we grade stone quality
Unlike diamonds and other precious stones, there is no standardized system to grade gemstone beads with holes. Designing and assembling your creations is hard enough as it is, so we categorize and grade each type of stone as simply as possible.
Top shelf gem quality. Displaying near perfect color and other characteristics expected of the stone. Very rare on our site.
Fine jewelry and high end pieces.
Near top shelf gem quality. Also very rare on our site.
Very Good Quality
Very good stone quality. Displays some imperfections, but has very good color or other characteristics expected of the stone overall.
Suitable for nearly all designer jewelry for resale. The vast majority of the beads on our site fall under “Very Good” or “Good”, as they are generally the best balance of quality and price point.
These beads display all or most characteristics of the stone, but may have more visible imperfections and exhibit less uniformity.
These beads display most characteristics of the stone, but have obvious imperfections on a larger number of beads. “Fair quality” strands will usually have a significant number of beads which we would consider “good quality” on them, but will have a lot more variation.
Suitable for some designer jewelry, personal projects, and other specific uses.
The grade for each lot is determined by how the stone quality compares to other specimens of the same gemstone. For each item, we do our best to share images and videos which highlight the types of imperfections and variations you can expect within the lot. If you need any additional information or pictures, or have any questions feel free to contact us.
Please keep in mind:
We always do our best to keep strands as uniform as possible both when we fill your order, and when we restock from our suppliers. However the raw material is purchased in lots, so strands will always have some variation in color, clarity, or other traits even if they share the same model number.
Sizes are given either as a single number or as a range. We allow the following tolerance based on the largest listed size.
